Anika and I share a deep desire to teach.
I, Isaiah, discovered my passion for teaching at the end of my DBS (Discipleship Bible School) when I was tasked with giving a biblical overview presentation, which I will link at the bottom.
I had 45 minutes to explain the overall narrative of the Bible. I needed to include scripture from all 12 weeks, highlight the redemptive plan of God, and reflect God’s character and nature throughout. It was challenging to fit so much information into such a short time, but it was well worth it.
I found myself excited to bring my own revelations and studies into the teaching. Hopefully, I was able to accurately express my love and gratitude for the Bible to everyone listening.
“So set yourselves apart to be holy, for I am the Lord your God. Keep all my decrees by putting them into practice, for I am the Lord who makes you holy.“
- Leviticus 20:7-8
When I teach, I don’t want people to simply hear information or just grow in knowledge. In the end, I want people to gain wisdom and understanding. I want them to feel like they know more of who God is. I want them to realize that they can go deeper still into the vast, unimaginable, and incomprehensible presence of our living God.
This drive pushes me to seize every opportunity to teach. I strongly feel led to pursue this passion however I can. I am blessed to be part of a campus that encourages new teachers and seeks to empower them.
This quarter, I’m taking a class called Logos that focuses on hermeneutics—how to think about, teach, and preach the Bible. The course is divided into four quarters, each with a different emphasis. This quarter is on the Old Testament, which happens to be my favorite!
Part of the homework is to create teaching/preaching material in line with the focus of the quarter, so I’m not only participating in a class, but also creating practical tools I can use outside. Given my strong interest in the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible), I would love to develop teaching materials for DBS centered around this topic.
“I want them to realize that they can go deeper still into the vast, unimaginable, and incomprehensible presence of our living God.”
I’m excited to share more with you as I continue this journey! If you’re curious about the books I’m diving into, I’ve listed them below:
- The Epic of Eden by Sandra Richter
- Seriously Dangerous Religion by Iain Provan
- Who Shall Ascend the Mountain of the Lord? by Michael L. Morales
- Flood and Fury by Matthew Lynch & Helen Paynter
Feel free to reach out of you’d like to discuss any of them!
“Yahweh bless you and keep you;
Yahweh make his face shine on you
and be gracious to you;
Yahweh turn his face toward you
and give you peace.”
– Numbers 6:24-26
